Why choose cardboard for your packaging?
The Confederation of Paper Industries has launched a white paper to try and help de-mystify some of the facts and figures surrounding our particular corner of the packaging world; cardboard.
The recent seismic change in awareness of the impact our consumerism has on the planet, prompted by David Attenborough’s Blue Plant programme, is to be embraced and built upon.
We do however have to accept that as long as people want things they neither grow nor make themselves, packaging has to exist; but let’s use as little as possible, made with as little environmental impact as possible and make it easy for all to recycle.
Cardboard has the highest recycling rate of any packaging material with us recycling approx. 80% in the UK.
MADE FROM RECYCLED PAPER
Most cardboard has at least some recycled paper in it. In some instances the cardboard you are using will be made of 100% recycled paper. Cardboard can be recycled up to 7 times before the fibre lengths of the paper become too short and need to be added to virgin fibres to maintain strength.
Before sending cardboard for recycling, can you reuse it?
In your business - reuse the pallet boards we top our pallets with as base board for your pallets? Shred cardboard that comes into your business to use as void fill?
At home - life size fort of the kids or new bed for the dog!?
DID YOU KNOW?
Using cardboard packaging can help reduce waste in the food chain as it helps keep fresh produce fresher for longer.
With 64% of UK consumers worried to some degree about packaging, to ensure your business delivers your product using a method which satisfies your customer’s ethical concerns, it is a highly worthwhile exercise to carry out an audit of your packaging processes.
